The Delta state Government has said Delta students studying in various Institutions of Higher learning will start receiving payments of Bursary for the 2018/2019 Academic session.
This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the Delta state Bursary and Scholarship Board, Mr Sunny Orishedere while flagging off the payment of the 2018/2019 Bursary to students of Delta State.
He stated that it has become a tradition for the Bursary and Scholarship Board to perform the formal flagging off ceremony, which announces the commencement of the payment of the Bursary to Delta state students.
He also apologised on the delay in the commencement of the payment of the Bursary saying it was due to irregularities discovered during verification and screening on the lists sent to the Board by the various institutions of learning across the country.
Orishedere said twenty four thousand, one hundred and seventy nine applied for the 2018/2019 Bursary adding that after a thorough screening seventeen thousand, one hundred and sixty nine students qualified to receive payments.
He also revealed that the report of the verification was submitted to the state Executive Council, adding that upon approval by the State Exco, part of the funds were released last week to commence payment.
He stated that Governor Okowa is interested and passionate about the welfare of the Delta State Students, assuring that all students qualified for the payment would be paid accordingly.
Mr. Orishedere pointed out that Delta state was the only state in the country, that is still maintaining the full payment of Bursary to students of higher institutions of learning, adding that the state Government has also initiated other scholarship programs such as the best graduating student and first class Scholarship to encourage and assist students.
Orishedere also said ” the board has been fully digitalized in line with the CBN directive and the appropriate staff have also been trained on the procedures so as to commence payment this week.”
He further revealed that the payment would be done on first come, first serve basis, as student whose institutions were cleared earlier would receive their payment first.
Also Speaking, the National President of the National Association of Delta state students ,NADESSTU, Comrade Saturday Godwin expressed appreciation to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration for having the welfare of the students in mind.
He commended the Governor for being consistent with the payment of bursary to Delta state students .
Comrade Godwin solicited the assistance of the state Government in addressing some of the challenges facing the Association.
Present at the flag off ceremony was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on student’s matters, Comrade Jerry Ehiwario and also the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student’s matters, Comrade Osadume Francis.
